An 18-year IT veteran and respected analyst on big data and private cloud, John Burke, Principal Research Analyst with Nemertes Research, advises key enterprise and vendor clients, and conducts and analyzes primary research. John leads research on big data, including data management and information lifecycle management, analytics and visualization. He also leads coverage of private and public cloud, private cloud infrastructure, and network, server and storage virtualization.
As research analyst and consultant, John draws on his past experience as a practitioner and director of IT to better understand the needs of IT executives and the challenges facing vendors trying to sell to them. His experience has given him broad and deep knowledge in computing, communications, and IT management.
John’s experience centers around high-level IT management positions in higher education. He directed the staff in the voice and data network, desktop support, and systems management groups at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul). John also worked in IT management and systems and network administration posts at The College of St. Catherine (St. Paul). He has experience in the application of technology at The Johns Hopkins University, where he supported the engineering faculty in its use of IT in research and teaching.
As an established speaker, John co-chairs UBM’s Big Data Conference and has appeared as presenter and moderator at UBM’s Interop and E2 Collaborate conferences, IDG’s IT Roadmap and Tech Target events, and private events for Comcast, Cisco, AT&T, and other vendors, around subjects including big data, the new data center and the private cloud, data center, network, and desktop virtualization, and security. John writes frequently for Network World, Tech Target, and other media sources.
John holds a masters degree in the history of science and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, both from The Johns Hopkins University.
