Are enterprises that are adopting Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks aware of the additional security measures they might require? This profile, by Forrester Consulting, examines the answer to that question and the strategies being used by North American multinational companies to ensure that their networks are properly protected.

In a commissioned study, conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of AT&T found that endpoint device security is among the top three concerns of more than half of decision-makers. Other items under heavy scrutiny are network control and management devices,  network-attached storage and cloud services. Forrester recommends running IPsec encryption over MPLS transport networks for network applications requiring strong security.

Network pros are highly concerned about protecting the network. In March 2012, AT&T commissioned Forrester Consulting to explore the key concerns of WAN decision-makers in multinational enterprises, among other key MPLS security topics. Forrester found that endpoint device security is among the top three concerns of more than half of these decision-makers (see Figure 1). Other items under heavy scrutiny are network control and management devices and network-attached storage. Cloud is also top of mind for many; 28% rate this as their No. 1 network security concern.
