Connectivity: from automobiles to avocados

  • IoT technology is a force that's transforming industries from automotive to utilities, energy, food supply, restaurant management, healthcare, and more.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has exploded in the past year, changing the face of many industries along the way. IoT may not be the first thing you think of when you’re driving your car, dining at a restaurant, or eating fresh produce, but IoT technology is already changing your experiences with many everyday activities.

Revolutionizing the open road

IoT technology enables three million connected cars on the road today, a number rising so fast that soon we won’t be able to imagine owning a car without built-in connectivity. Connecting cars isn’t just about managing your music collection or making phone calls while on the go. A connected car has the potential to help you navigate more efficiently, avoid traffic jams, reduce fuel consumption, and more. A connected car can also help promote safer driving and will eventually enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication.

Serving up efficiencies

IoT technology breakthroughs are happening beyond the automobile industry. When your favorite fast-food restaurant introduces a new menu item, a manual update to adjust and re-program the restaurant’s ovens is usually required. Our IoT team is helping one customer implement a solution that streamlines updates with a SIM card embedded at the restaurant and a data platform controlled in a central location. Data is collected via the SIM card which the customer can use to analyze equipment performance, schedule maintenance, and remotely program updates. The solution is built using AT&T IoT Services, a set of developer tools and services to build IoT Solutions. This saves time, money, and energy for the restaurant and enables the restaurant to efficiently change their menu.

Maximizing supply chain logistics

IoT is also revolutionizing supply chain logistics. Have you ever bought a fresh avocado in the middle of winter? Produce is one of the most fragile goods to transport. Even a slight temperature change can accelerate spoilage. IoT technology helps produce companies improve transport operations in order to better deliver product to more consumers, no matter what season. With AT&T CargoView with FlightSafe®, companies can monitor and track global assets using near real-time location and sensor information that maximizes supply chain visibility, thus allowing companies to better protect precious cargo in transit. That’s something to think about the next time you’re enjoying homemade guacamole in January! AT&T CargoView with FlightSafe is also being used to improve shipments of all types, including medical and pharmaceutical shipments, oil and gas equipment, electronics, fashion and art, critical replacement parts, and more.

IoT Solutions will provide the next level of operational efficiencies for businesses around the globe. Tell us how your business can be transformed using IoT solutions to manage and control your assets.
